Vampires and paramedics. What the heck? Thought I had a good handle on paranormal books but this one totally came out of left field at me. As an old school EMT from way back when, I found the whole concept to be intriguing. I don't do reviews on the plot. Get the book, after all it is free. I will speak to the characters. Captured my interest from the blurb and held true for the whole book. I can see this series developing a Urban Fantasy/Paranormal/Mystery following. I found the medical procedures/terminology spot-on. The growing friendship between the main characters to be realistic. How good is it you asked? Bought book 2.

The Vampire and the Paramedic An Extreme Medical Services Prequel edition by Jamie Davis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
It was sweet love story about a vampire who falls for a paramedic. My biggest issue with the story line is the author's plain descriptions of the paranormal but yet he has the medical descriptions so detailed. For instance, when Brynne is rewarded by the Fae elder and given Fairy Nectar Fae drink, it is given to her in a pewter mug. I know the reason it's pewter but others might not. Also, "Unusuals", really? Why not just stick with paranormal world or something. It's like in Avatar when they can the resource they're after "Unobtainium". I'm sorry to say it that harshly but it just caused a pause in the story for me every time it was said.
All that being said, James does seem like a decent (hmm, how to say it) Lord, vampire, undead guy. Brynne apparently has awoken a part of him that's been dormant for a century or more (who's counting right). When he meets her while she's doing her job as a paramedic, she has no idea who he is but she pretty much knows what he is right away and yet she takes charge of the crisis happening and puts James to work telling him what to do. It's an eyebrow raiser to him for sure but still he finds that he likes it about her. She's strong willed and confident in her job and James wants to reward her for that and for saving his friend's life but will she let him? You'll just have to read it to find out for yourself.
And ordinarily, if I enjoy a Prequel, I don't hesitate to download the first book. When I took a look at Book 1, however, some reviewers mentioned cliffhangers. Nope, not for me. I just don't knowingly read cliffhanger books.
But as far as this one goes--it was a decent start to the World and it's inhabitants. I think that this series (that apparently revolves around Paramedics who service Paranormals) has a great deal of potential for future books. The World Building was decent. It was too short to really develop much character depth, so as a result I didn't really connect very well with the characters. But I can see that the storyline can continue for many books to come.
Many books that--sorry to say--I won't be reading. No Cliffhangers for me, because I require some sort of resolution at the end of my stories. But if that sort of thing doesn't bother you, then this may be a good series to start if you like a Fantasy with plenty of supernatural species.
Vampire James needs to call a paramedic when his right-hand man/werewolf Rudy is almost killed in a car accident. Rudy's life is saved by a young paramedic named Brynne Garvey, and James is in debt to her. She refuses his extravagant gifts, but he starts to teach her how to treat her patients within the magical world. As Brynne has her eyes opened to the secret world around her, James finds himself becoming closer to her.
I did not think that Extreme Medical Services was going to be like this at all. I thought it was going to be very technical, and just a lot of sadness and blood. I even thought that this book was just a special edition of the "regular" medical services series, like a Halloween edition. Boy, was I wrong!
The Extreme Medical Services series is about human doctors treating patients from the supernatural world and therefore trying to keep the peace between the human world and the supernatural world. This is a very unique concept that drew me in from the beginning.
Secondly, I loved all the characters. Brynne was such a professional EMS and saved a man who she did not even know how to save. She was even willing to go into a world she knew nothing about in order to learn more about the people she might be saving the lives of in the future. It does have some romantic elements, but who wouldn't fall in love with a woman who was so kind, strong, and smart enough to take in all the information James was giving her in order to help his people. I did not mind the romance at all.
Overall, this was an amazing prequel to the series. My views were completely changed, and I was ecstatic to realize that I had picked up the first book in the series at some point. I cannot wait to continue with this series.
As other reviewers have noted already, this is a bit of a twist from the "normal" or "standard" point of view of paranormals interacting with humans (or vice versa). The overarching plot has human paramedics attending to calls specifically for paranormals. It is not humorous but it has a bit of a light touch. I also agree with some reviewers this prequel was pretty heavily loaded with information in a more didactic manner -- telling rather than showing through action or more dialogue -- not necessarily a bad thing, just different for me. However, I was not detracted from enjoying the tale and liking the two main characters. I enjoyed it enough to obtain the next full-length novel. I look forward to experiencing a different world view in this genre. I give it 3.5 stars, better than 3 but not quite up to 4 stars for me. I have hope a full novel will give the author more opportunity for deeper development of characters and plot building.
