Space for a big garden. Fruit trees. A huge barn. A deck with an amazing view. The blackberry-infested property on the hill seemed to have limitless potential. When Tammy Owen moved from the city to a five-acre farm, she hoped to learn how to live closer to the land. What she learned instead was a lot about life.
House of Goats (Audible Audio Edition) Tammy Owen Colleen Patrick LLC Wyrd Goat Press Books
I bought this as a light read for a flight and started reading ahead of time out of curiosity. The author's light and friendly style sucked me in rapidly and made it seem as if she were relating the story to me over a beer or around their firepit (which sounds wonderful). The imagery is clear and vivid but not overdone. The descriptions of the relationships with the animals make it clear to anyone who has had a pet that the author and her family really do love them and you get a wonderful sense of the personalities so that when sad things happen you grieve with her and when funny things happen you can't help but laugh.I felt like she could have gone into slightly more depth on how the goats were slaughtered when they were, every other aspect of their care was covered in such depth that this was a noticeable gap.
I rarely read this genre but I'm really enjoying this and am going to have to go find more by the same author. She's got a style I want to read more of.

House of Goats (Audible Audio Edition) Tammy Owen Colleen Patrick LLC Wyrd Goat Press Books Reviews
A fun read. Enjoyable memoirs of goats, neighbors, "dangerous" meter men, saving and losing the animals in your care, and all the exigencies of managing a small farm homestead. I almost felt prepared to own my own pair of goats by the end.
So I am thoroughly cured of my desire to own goats, and absolutely thrilled and impressed with Tammy Owen's writing. She manages to capture the crazy challenges of their life with grace, laughter, and fun. I'm looking forward to reading more.
I picked the book up in the "Small Press Room" at RadCon 2014. I just couldn't resist a book entitled "House of Goats" because I have been keeping goats as pets for over 20 years and thought it would be fun to hear about someone else's "Goats 101" experiences.
Each of the vignettes of "goatly adventures" sounded very familiar - driving out to the middle of nowhere to purchase goats & evaluating the seller when deciding whether to adopt goats from them; the "great caprine escape" (happened too frequently -goats KNOW the grass is greener on the other side of the fence and will constantly challenge the fence) happening too often to count (she missed the "escape to eat flowers in cemetery resulting in goat 'redecorating' the vet's office when spewing rainbows of flower remnants" ... but she still had goat escapes covering both "fence fails" and "what? they know how to undo that kind of latch, too?" escapes which we've all gone through); instances of goats becoming ill from various things (we've seen them all, and, yes, that's what you experience the first time you see it... worms, abscesses, and icky skin irritations [we didn't get lice, but they had flaky dry skin and 'dry rot' from being stupid and standing out in the rain]); and of course, the pain of losing a favorite pet.
It was loads of fun reliving the "yup, been there, done that" experiences. It made me wonder if she'd been an anonymous neighbor of mine observing and recording our goatly adventures - or maybe that's just everyone who adopts goats goes through.
This book was purchased as a gifr for my daughter is a goat farmer and fleece producer. She claims this book is an excellent aid to her business evenhough she has about 27 years in the business.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, which is more about life and death than it is about goats. Tammy has a practical outlook tempered with compassion, and a gung-ho spirit I admire.
This is a terrific book well-written, funny, touching, and if you have never lived on a farm, a real eye-opener. Plus it is actually useful, if you are thinking about a move to the country to try your hand at raising goats ...
I purchased the book yesterday and could not put it down. It was like finding a safe warm home on a stormy night. I finished the book last night... It was wonderful. I loved all the memories of my goats and gardens as I am Judy in the book. Thank you for the welcome home, Tammy
