Really enjoyed Hank's story as he journeyed through actual historical events and brushed shoulders with notable figures like General Pershing, Lt George Patton, Big Tom Pendergast, and Harry Truman. The action and the setting have the flavor of a good western tale impacted by the presence of lurking shadows and evil spirits. If you enjoyed Louis L'Amour's Haunted Mesa, I think you'll like this as well.
This is a very good story set in the early 1900's. Life was rough and a struggle for many but Hank' s story shows just how good life can be. More than anything I appreciate reading stories that Don't have profanity and the use of God's name inappropriately.
Very well written by a "fellow brother in arms" , good man and inspirational person. The only criticism I have it seems like Uncle Edward suddenly dropped off the map near the end. I think he should have continued to be addressed since Uncle Edward was such an important character to the Main Characer's life
I read this book in a day and a half because it was an easy read that I could not put down. The author’s incredible use of imagery paints a beautiful picture of the West Texas landscape and a very real and scary picture of the many villainous characters of the dark side. The author was so descriptive that I could picture every event as if I were there or watching a movie. I love historical fiction and loved how famous people were woven into the storyline. I was quite surprised by the elements of the supernatural, as I have not experienced that in any historical fiction work I’ve read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to future works by this author.
Oh my! How can I describe this book when there are so many dimensions of excitement, intrigue, emotional changes with the main characters, suspense, never knowing what will happen next...and on and on. I loved this book so much, I could hardly put it down! When I would pause, I'd find myself thinking about it and being so curious, I would have to go right back to it. I understand this is a first for the author, and I am really hoping many more of his books will be on the market soon. You will find a little bit of everything, except filth. Very clean and refresshingly so!

"The Company Man" is a well-written tale blending elements of historical fiction and the supernatural as it tells the story of Hank Hambledon, from childhood on a ranch, to war, to civilian life; through rousing victories and agonizing personal defeats. As I read, I was reminded time and again of Elmer Kelton the writing is excellent and the characters are strong but realistic. Hank, though flawed, is undoubtedly a hero, but he never comes across as a superman, able to leap over his obstacles in a single bound. As with the best historical fiction, "The Company Man" is well researched. Each detail and every description feels spot on, evoking, in a convincing manner, the proper time and place in whichever setting Hank finds himself. The integral use of the supernatural in the story reminded me of any number of James Rollins novels what's going on in the supernatural realm provides the impetus for the narrative. Its absence would reduce the otherwise interesting events of Hank's life to a string of disjointed stories.
You shouldn't skip Chapter 1, but the story doesn't really take off until Chapter 2. The first chapter covers the Hambledon family, introducing important supporting characters (Uncle Edward in particular) and establishing Hank's family history. While this is good material, interesting enough to have its own treatment, it does slow the story down. Once you get through it, though, hang on. You're in for an exciting ride.
Though unapologetically Christian in outlook, "The Company Man" does not come across as preachy. It is, first and foremost, an engaging and well-executed story, and because of that, I have no problem recommending it to any reader, whether Christian or not. Having said that, what follows will be of more interest to the Christian reader.
While many characters in the book attend a Church of Christ, the book is not a "Church of Christ" book. It is not used to promote or disparage any particular doctrine or theological viewpoint. It is simply the story of a Christian man who happens to be a member of a Church of Christ.
One of the advantages of fiction is that it allows us to see into things we aren't able to in real life, such as the inner thoughts and motivations of people. In this novel we are also allowed to peer into the spiritual world around us both the good and the evil. In "The Company Man", we get to witness the effect of the demonic upon the human. Many of the tragedies of the novel are effected by or influenced by evil spirits. Even Hank is not immune. These serve to remind us 1) to be more understanding of the actions of others, given that they may be prompted by dark spiritual influences, and 2) to be on guard against those same influences. Fortunately, we also get to see the divine. During some of the darkest periods in Hank's story, we are given a glimpse of the light. They serve as an affirmation of the hope we have because of our faith, even in times of great struggle.
And speaking of struggle, that is one area where I wish we had more access to Hank's inner thoughts and feelings. As mentioned in the book description, "The Company Man" is partly a story of redemption. But redemption from what? Late in the book we are told of Hank's faith struggle, catalyzed by one of his most devastating defeats, but we don't get to _see_ it as it unfolds. Hank's struggle has the potential to resonate with those who are in the midst of their own faith struggle. He could give voice to their doubts and fears by expressing his own. He could demonstrate that it's okay to have those struggles. But at least we are shown that in spite of the struggle, there is hope. And perhaps that is why the author chose to withhold the other from us.
The story of Hank Hambledon's life from the late 1800s to the 1930s is completely captivating! I finished this book over two days, reading whenever I had the chance - finished in spite of being moved to such heavy tears that I had to stop reading on three occasions. This is a tale of Christian manliness, of abiding love, and of the heartache that comes into every life, sometimes especially to those who seem to deserve it the least. From a boyhood on the range in west Texas, to Calvary duty with the Army in the Philippine Islands, and back to civilian family life, the author paints a vivid picture of Hank and his surroundings that draws the reader deeply into the story. As a Texan with a lot of military service, not to mention being raised in the church of Christ - of which the author is an expert - I found so much truth and familiarity with the story. However, anyone who has known the abiding love between a husband and wife, and the struggle to balance work and family, will find something familiar here. Congratulations to Retired Sgt Major Willeford on the best book I have read in a very long time. And I read a lot...
